A New
World Record was Set in Halifax January 28, 04!
It’s official!
History was made at the Halifax Metro Center on January 28, 2004.
Two Peewee teams from Nova Scotia, the Halifax Mooseheads Peewee
AAA and the Sackville Flyers Peewee AAA, set a new world record
for shots on net doing full ice UltraSkills flow drills at a demonstration
in front of over 9,000 excited fans. They completely eclipsed the
old mark of 278 in 6 minutes which had been set on October 4, 03
at the Corel Centre in Ottawa by two Peewee AAA teams from eastern
Ontario.
“You could tell before they went on the ice, that the guys were
very hungry to set the record”, said Kevin Cameron, the president
of the Halifax Mooseheads. “They gave it their all, and they were
rewarded…the big crowd really seemed to motivate them,” he added.
When the teams passed the old mark and then smashed the 300 barrier
the crowd went wild and the applause did not stop until they left
the ice. The event was not without controversy however. In the last
30 seconds of the demonstration there was an absolute flurry of
shots as the players were desperately trying to push the mark to
a new level. There was some concern that with all the activity,
it would have been impossible for the technician to make an accurate
recording of every shot and the shot clock at this point was an
absolute blur. As the buzzer sounded the shot clock showed 378 but
two representatives from the Ontario delegation who had brought
an independent counter to the event protested and eventually called
for a video review. This review confirmed that a world record had
in fact been set, but that the total number of shots that could
be accurately recorded was 349. Since the tape has now been accidentally
recorded over, there has been no opportunity for any independent
review. Nevertheless, officially, a new world record was set, (in
fact it was smashed!) and the new standard is now 349 shots in a
6 minute full ice UltraSkills flow drill.
The next opportunity to break the record will be March 22, 04 at
the Aitken Centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Don’t miss it!
